HISTORY 101-PAST REGENERATIONS
Welcome, Doctor. Now that you know who you are, it is time to begin in earnest the process of establishing your legacy. Humans are most fond of their quotes, and I found this one particularly intriguing: It is said that history repeats itself, but we are only doomed to relive our past if we fail to learn from it. The past is not a map to where you are going, it's a record of where you have been. Its purpose is not to drag you back through emotional muck, but to serve you best by reminding you of lessons learned so you can avoid them in the future. That is your goal today, Doctor. Learn from the past in order to secure your future.
|
The First Doctor-Tardis Thief Personality: He is a mixture of eccentric curmudgeon and "grandfatherly" protector. He considers his intellect far superior to most species and is not shy about saying so. Stubborn and abrasive, he can be a bit 'high handed' with his travelling companions, but he mellows over time and even grows quite fond of them. This time traveler considers himself an exile from his home planet and plans to return there one day when he is able. It should be noted that his future incarnations have a profound respect for him, so much so that his judgment is often met without question. He is fiercely loyal to his granddaughter Susan, and those he considers true friends. Appearance: He appears to be an elderly, frail old man suffering from rheumatism and other ailments. He has shoulder-length white hair and blue eyes that seem to alternately sparkle with mischief and glare with annoyance depending on the day. His usual manner of dress is rather Edwardian-a frock coat and tartan trousers. On several occasions, he has even been known to thrown in a cape for added flair. Quirks: He has a habit of mangling words and phrases and is well-known for his exaggerated sighs and muttering. He also has great trouble remembering (or at least pretends to) the surname of his first companion, Ian Chesterton, often calling him many variations such as "Chesserman' or the like. He refers to young women as 'child' and young men as 'my boy', perhaps not so much of a quirk, but more of a sign of his age. Althouh, according to Gallifryean terms, as Susan once put it, he was merely an adolescent! Brief History: *Inconsistent Data-Conflicting Reports* There are varied versions of the history; my data banks have provided you with the most widely known and accepted. A rather poor student by designs of his own choosing, the original incarnation had no desire to settle down into life on Gallifrey but wished the freedom to explore and travel from a young age. His rebellious curiosity and the breaking of the Time Lord's law of non-interference in galactic affairs caused him to be sentenced to 'burning' (being erased from history). The person responsible for carrying out this order was non other than his older brother, Braxiatel, who was serving as "Lord Burner" for the President at the time. It is said that he allowed 'an old man and his granddaughter' to escape Gallifrey in a stolen Type 40 TARDIS. The First Doctor also took with him, the Hand of Omega. Being as he had failed his class on how to fly a TARDIS, he had, of course, no idea where he would land. He landed in 1963, England, on Earth. The rest, as they say, is history. Reason for Regeneration: After battling with the Cybermen in a future timeline of 1986, the Doctor is forced to regenerate for the first time when his body physically weakened by age and exhaustion can no longer continue. The Second Doctor-Cunning Clown Personality: In a word, he was the perfect embodiment of that favorite uncle that everyone loves to laugh both with and at-a charming, bumbling buffoon who still managed to appear witty and clever. This was a clever guise on his part, however, a ruse used to lull those around him into complacency. Behind the childish demeanor and the inept attitude was a razor sharp mind and an underlying ruthlessness. He was not above using even those close to him to serve his own means, and firmly believed that 'sacrificing few for the common good of many' was a creed to live by. That being said, he was much more personable than his predecessor, and actually enjoyed travelling with his companions, thinking of them as compatriots rather than subordinates. Appearance: In keeping with his 'clownish' personality, his clothing was over-sized an ill fit. His normal attire was a battered old frock coat, trousers that were several sizes too large, a bow tie, and more often than not some type of hat. As one of his companions, Polly, described him, he looked a bit like an "unmade bed". His hair was styled in the manner of the Beatles and he had eyes that changed colors alternately between brown, blue, grey, and green. One note of interest about his coat-it did have a hidden pocket sewn within the lining that held all sorts of objects. Much like the Doctor himself; even his clothing had their secrets, it would seem. Quirks: He played the recorder (a flute-like woodwind musical instrument) when under stress or whenever he needed to concentrate. He could also turn the mouthpiece of the instrument into a spyglass, use it as a blowgun, or send hidden messages encoded within the tunes he played. This Doctor also had the ability to don disguises without regard to age, gender, or dignity-effectively transforming himself at will with very little effort or self-consciousness. Not a bad trait for a 'man on the run'. He had an interest in Tibetan Buddhism and was the first incarnation to use the 500 Year Diary. Brief History: After regenerating into the 2nd Doctor, he would continue his travels throughout time and space, picking up several new companions during his adventures, including a lad from 16th century Scotland. On one of his more memorable adventures in the Land of Fiction, the Doctor would do battle with Omega alongside a future incarnation of himself in attempt to try and stop Omega from ripping apart reality. Luckily, they were successful in their combined endeavors, though he briefly lost his recorder and had to buy a new one. The Doctor would later encounter another Time Lord, the War Chief, who had given space-time vessel technology to the War Lords, who were kidnapping human soldiers from various time periods to use them as an army to overtake the galaxy. Knowing full well what would happen, he revealed his position to the Time Lord Council and asked for their help in stopping the War Chief, as he could not do it alone. By doing so, he had effectively turned himself in and was put on trial for his previous crimes of interference in galactic affairs and sentenced to exile on 20th century Earth with forced regeneration; his companions removed from him with their memories of their travels with him wiped away completely. However, before the sentence could be carried out, the CIA (Celestial Intervention Agency) 'recruited' him as a 'hired gun'. He worked with them for quite some time, taking up residence on Earth and living in considerable luxury before his luck ran out and he was trapped by the Time Lords during an elaborate 'game show' ruse and finally forced to regenerate and have his sentence of exile begin. Reason for Regeneration: Punishment as ordered by the Council of Time Lords The Third Doctor-Earth Exile Personality: This incarnation was a man of diplomacy who preferred peaceful means of resolving a conflict, though he was not afraid to use means of force if necessary, employing his mastery of Venusian aikido many times to defeat his opponents. He despised closed-minded, stubborn, or selfishly goal-driven people and would go to absurd lengths to prove them wrong. His strong sense of morality over rules often placed him in direct conflict with persons of authority, particularly high ranking military officials. He was an eternal optimist and a consummate gentleman, sometimes described as a 'hero of the Victorian mold'. Compassionate by nature, he has even been known to visit the Master in prison and spoke of him lovingly as an 'old friend'. Appearance: The Third Doctor is a bit of a dandy, even considered foppish by some. Preferring the ornate, he wore frilled shirts, Inverness capes, velvet smoking jackets, and bow ties. Appearing as a man in his fifties, he had curly white hair, a rather large pointy nose, and a perpetual smile. Quirks: He had a passion for gadgets and vintage cars, especially his personal car affectionately named Bessie. He was known to enjoy wine and would occasionally perform magic tricks. He also had such a dislike for the Second Doctor that when they were forced to work together they could only do so under the 'supervision' of the first incarnation. Brief History: Exiled to Earth as punishment by the Time Lord Council, the Doctor reluctantly worked at UNIT (Unified Intelligence Task Force) as an unpaid scientific advisor, where he would clash notably with Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. The two would later become good friends, however, and it should be noted that even after his exile was lifted, the Doctor would voluntarily continue to work with UNIT for some time. Due to his successful defeat of the Axons, who planned to deplete the Earth's energy, the Time Lords granted him a partial reprieve, allowing him limited travel so long as it was on missions approved by them, most notably against the Master. For his part in helping stop Omega (along with the first two incarnations), the exile was finally lifted. It was this incarnation of the Doctor that would first encounter the news reporter, Sarah Jane Smith. On the planet, Metebelis III, in order to save his companions, his old mentor, and the whole cosmos, the Doctor would sacrifice his life and expose himself to lethal levels of radiation to destroy the web of the Great One. He would wander in a time vortex for 10 years, the radiation eating away at his body before he would finally regenerate. Reason for Regeneration: Radiation Sickness The Fourth Doctor-Eager Explorer Personality: This incarnation was considered the least human-like of all the doctors, and indeed, stood out even among his own people. Extremely quick witted, his mind could make leaps of thought that even he couldn't always follow, which allowed him to keep friends and foes off guard, much to his delight. Also keeping them off their toes was his tendency for strange pranks and oddball humor. For as much as he confused others, this doctor had a keen sense of judgement of character, almost seeming to know instantly whether or not they could be trusted. However, despite his humor and odd charm, he was also aloof and brooding. And when he was roused to anger, was furious and aggressive, though he still preferred to use non-lethal moves. Appearance: In contrast to his former incarnations, this doctor was not only younger in appearance but also appeared unkempt, dressed in comfortable and bohemian clothing and a floppy fedora hat covering his curly hair. His most iconic accessory however, was the ever longer multi color scarf, originally knitted by Madame Nostradamus. Also, he had a tendency to adorn his brown trench coat with various lapel pins and broaches, such as one that looked like a flock of geese. Such a wardrobe led others to describe him as a sort of 'space vagrant'. Even when his costume choices darken to a more morose palette near the end of his journeys, it was still as wild and unkempt as his mind. Quirks: Like previous doctors, his pockets held all sorts of treasures, such as souvenirs from the various planets he traveled to or his favorite jelly babies which he offered when greeting someone. In fact, he has the worst sweeth tooth, though other incarnations also indulged. He also enjoyed playing with a yo-yo. He even combined it with another of his favorite things, winding up companions, when he tricked Leela into believing it was for an experiment while having her stand still and watch him play for an extended time. Also, this doctor was the first to write a series of education books, titled "Doctor Who Discovers", though originally, the title was supposed to be "The Doctor, Who Discovers". Brief History: This doctor was very quick to leave UNIT, only stopping by occasionally to help, but otherwise keeping as much distance as possible. Instead, he traveled the universe alongside Sarah Jane Smith for a time, before a telepathic summons from Gallifrey forced him to leave her behind, as humans were not welcomed. When he arrived, he was framed for the murder of the Lord President (despite having tried to stop it) and only delayed the execution by throwing his name into the ring as a candidate. This allowed him time to find the real killer, who was The Master and defeated him. After this, despite being the only candidate for Lord President, he went to say goodbye to Sarah Jane and continue his adventures. It was during this time that K-9 made his first appearance. When he learned of a threat to his home, he pretended to become vain and power hungry, taking on the role of Lord President, in order to prevent a double invasion by both the Vardans and the Sontarans. After this successful mission, he gave the leadership position back to his mentor Borusa and continued to have more adventures, before ending up on a misson for the White Guardian, who gave him a companion, the Time Lady Romana. Though they did not get along at first, they were able to successfully complete the mission and continue on. On a return trip to Gallifrey, they ended up by accident in an “E-Space” (a smaller pocket universe), where the young boy Adric stowed on board and become another companion. Some time later, he and The Master worked together to reopen gateways between universes, The Master turned on him, attempting to use the entropy they had originally locked up as a weapon. In the midst of this battle, he fell from a radio tower, where his next regeneration was waiting and the two merged. Reasons for Regeneration: Falling from a radio tower during a struggle with The Master. The Fifth Doctor-Peace Seeking Pacifist Personality: This incarnation of the Doctor believed in fair play, honesty, good manners, and was the most humane of the regenerations to date. Reserved and sensitive, he preferred not to make an imposition of himself, and preferred to use talk and diplomacy to resolve a problem rather than physical means, although if pushed to that point he was more than able to defend himself in a fight. Open and vulnerable, he would express his fears readily to his companions, who he considered friends, even when the relationship between them was not the most harmonious. His humanity was also his Achilles heel, and could serve to make him look weak and indecisive. He was panicky under pressure, which cost both him and those around him dearly on more than one occasion. He detested senseless violence and was openly repulsed by it, and when meeting with his seventh incarnation, was very upset by the manipulative nature shown. Appearance: His love of cricket dictated his clothing choices; both of the outfits he wore were indicative of the sport's traditional 'whites' and were, in fact, so closely modeled to it that he could take off his coat and play the sport without comment on his appearance. His first outfit was a long beige coat with a red lining around the collar, sleeves, coats, and tails. He was never without a piece of celery stuck in his left lapel, due to his allergy of gases in the praxis range of the spectrum. If those gases were present, the celery would turn purple and he would eat it. Under the coat was a long-sleeved white cricket jumper and white dress shirt with question marks embroidered on the collar. His pants were a unique pattern of brown and beige stripes; the whole look topped off with a Panama hat that had a red band with a silver sequined pattern. This youthful looking Doctor was quite the dandy! Quirks: He loved to play cricket, and had a keen interest about anything from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. He was also an avid drinker of tea, and had the unique ability to decipher what ingredients were in a drink by smell alone. He wore a pair of 'brainy specs' on occasion to make him 'look clever'. He also carried a Molenski Univarius (akin to a Swiss Army knife) that he claimed could fix anything. Brief History: Much like his predecessors, this incarnation spent a good deal of time in battle with the Master; the two dueling wits across various time dimensions and galaxies. Much of his troubles, however, centered around his companions and the time spent rescuing them from one scrape or the other, particularly young Adric, a young Alzarian stowaway with whom the Doctor had a rather tumultuous mentor/companion relationship. Aldric's untimely death, however, would haunt him for centuries, perhaps due to his own momentary hesitation that caused the attacking Cyberman to damage the TARDIS controls to such an extent that the Doctor was unable to rescue the boy, consigning him to be set adrift in a space craft that would not only result in his death but the extinction of the dinosaurs here on Earth. There were good times, as well, mind you; this incarnation seemed to flit from one time period to another going to balls and parties in various historic periods on a regular basis. One of the most heartbreaking moments for the Doctor was the revelation that Turlough, one of his companions, was actually an agent of the Black Guardian, sent to sabotage the TARDIS. However, after the teen switched allegiances and passed a test set forth by the Doctor and White Guardian, all was forgiven and he was allowed to stay on board, speaking much of the Doctor's forgiving nature. In the end, the Doctor would willingly end this regeneration for Peri, his most constant companion, by giving up his share of the cure for spectrox toxamia to save her life. His last words were "Aldric?" Reason for Regeneration: Spectrox Toxamia The Sixth Doctor-Colorful Character Personality: This doctor, for all of his bright colors, could have a surprising dark edge. He was not only brash, arrogant, and self-absorbed, but he also had a stubborn streak and an unwillingness to admit he was wrong. He was also the first doctor to see reason for violence and more willing to use it then his predecessors. However, he could also be incredibly kind and compassionate and this incarnation had a determination to defeat evil that few have ever matched. As his particular journey continued, he went through a period of dark mourning, even becoming reclusive; even after his companion Grant pulled him out of it, he would always be a bit sombre, though he did eventually find plenty of reasons to joke and be light hearted, controlling his darker nature well. Appearance: He was a tall man, with distinctive curly blond hair but most forgot his physical traits when faced with his choice of clothing. Bright to the point of garishness, he wore a multi-colored coat, often paired with yellow pants and orange spats that went over green shoes. Often, he had a pin in the shape of a cat on his lapel, having a fondness for the creature, and varying colors of waistcoats and cravats. All of this made a very foolish image, which worked in his favor. Often people noticed his coat and nothing else, allowing him to accomplish things that he might not have, had he been dressed more commonly. (Besides, according to a later regeneration, he won an award for this coat, proving the human expression that taste is subjective.) Quirks: Due to his temperamental nature, he could overreact if his plans were questioned or second guessed. He also had a bad habit of starting to go one way and accidentally going another, leaving his companions to either chase after him or stand there confused. On the softer side, he had a deep love of poetry and was known to quote passages often. Then of course, he did have his memorable bright multi-colored umbrella for rainy days. Brief History: The doctor began his journey with many adventures, even crossing paths once with Christopher Columbus, alongside his companion, Peri. As a reward for putting up with so much, he thought to take her for a relaxing break on Ravolox, due to how similar it was to Earth. However, the two discovered that it really was Earth, moved several lightyears away. In the course of their investigating this mystery, the two were separated, as the Doctor was forced to return to Gallifrey to stand trial. Accused of breaking several laws by the Valeyard, he tried to use his position as Lord President to avoid trial, only to be told that he had been let go due to inactivity in that role. While the trial was eventually dismissed due to the Valeyard actually being the Doctor in the form of a dark manifestation from future regenerations, he also learned that the High Council had worked with the Valeyard in an attempt to steal his remaining lives. While he did defeat them, he would forever after have a sour taste in his mouth for the Time Lords and what he called their ‘decadence’. From then on, he continued to have adventures away from Gallifrey, even living in Victorian London for a time as a professor. His adventures eventually led him to the Library of Carsus, where he and an old Time Lord friend, Professor Rummas, tried to stop the Lamprey from destroying creation. This fight would take much out of the doctor, leaving him weak and vulnerable. Feeling his death come on, he flew the Tardis into space for one last look, only to be bombarded by the Rani. This attack would further weaken the doctor and as he fell against the control panel, he suffered a traumatic concussion that would force him to regenerate. Reasons for Regeneration: After being severely weakened, the Doctor suffered a traumatic head injury. The Seventh Doctor-Darker Doctor Personality: At first, he seems to be a rather off the wall character, given to acting the clown; a light-hearted eccentric buffoon. Beneath the surface, however, lay the heart of a cunning master manipulator and over time his darker nature became more and more evident. Described as a Machiavellian genius of frightful caliber, he was not above using his ability to control minds to turn the odds in his favor or achieve a desired outcome. He saw the battle between good and evil as a giant chess game and those around him as pawns to be used in the winning of it. His companion, Ace, described him once as having 'the deepest, saddest, eyes', and the Doctor's 11th incarnation refers to this particular regeneration as 'probably one of my more circumspect periods'. Appearance: A man whose clothing changed the darker his personality became, he started out wearing 'fun' clothing such as a red paisley scarf, yellow pullover with turquoise zigzag lines and red question marks emblazoned on it, all tucked into tweed trousers topped with red suspenders. To complete the look was a natty bow tie and Panama hat, and his signature umbrella with a question-mark handle. As his personality grew darker, so did the clothing, his coat changing to darker brown and his scarf going to a deep burgundy. Quirks: He was a consummate fan of chess, and had an unusual affinity for playing the spoons. He actually won an award for the latter by representing Earth in the 309th Intergalactic Song Contest. He had a habit of mangling phrases and idioms, such as "Time and tide melt the snowman." When meeting new people it was his habit to raise his hat and smile at them. It should be noted that many of these endearing quirks disappeared after his personality took on a darker note. Brief History: It almost seems fated that this incarnation would have a darker nature; his initial regeneration took place when he was a prisoner of the Rani, who added to the trauma by injecting him with an amnesia-inducing drug while pretending to be his companion, Melanie. While the plot was eventually uncovered and the Rani defeated, the psychological damage had already been done. One of his more memorable adventures had him embroiled in a bitter war between Dalek factions on their home planet; his manipulations led to the alleged destruction of Skaro and the returning of the Hand of Omega to Gallifrey. He also served as Champion for the Eternal known as Time, with the Master serving as the Champion for Death. During this time, he would go on to perform many good deeds, but many wrong decisions would be made as well. Even in death, the Master proved trouble for the Doctor, his ashes managing to escape their container and damaging the TARDIS controls, forcing the Doctor to land in the middle of a San Francisco gang war. Caught in the crossfire, he was taken to the hospital and 'died' under surgery performed by Dr. Grace Holloway in an attempt to correct his 'abnormal heartbeat'. Due to the anesthesia, it would be several weeks until he would actually regenerate into his next incarnation. Reason for Regeneration: Bullet wounds and subsequent heart surgery |
The Eighth Doctor-Paradoxical Psychic Personality: This doctor was a passionate, even romantic man, the first of the incarnations to have romantic feelings for a human. In fact, he once said how he felt desire to be close to someone and share in that experience. He also viewed his previous incarnation’s manipulative nature as disdainful, abandoning for a time the tendency to travel alone. However, this was a slight bit of hypocrisy by him, since on at least one occasion, he was known to manipulate others with flattery. Perhaps old habits die hard. After many tragedies occurred, such as the lost of his heart, he grew darker and angrier but he never lost that passion for life nor his compassion for other beings. Appearance: As befits a man with a romantic soul, he dressed in clothing of a Victorian cut. Whether it be a Wild Bill Hitchcock costume or a green velvet jacket with a top hat, he cut a dashing figure. While he wore many styles throughout his adventures, his most classic look was that of a green velvet trench and a blue ascot, tied haphazardly, his clothes showing wear and tear but yet striking. He also had distinctively color changing eyes, having at least once been green, and often shifting from their standard blue to grey when questioned about his past. He also had longish curly hair, which only added to the charm. Quirks: He had a sometime unsettling habit of predicting people’s future; often even on a first meeting, he would give them hints about their future, though he was careful not to express outright the actual details. Only once did he do so. He also had a habit of repeating people’s names when he was excited or if he was trying to get a point across. Perhaps due to the romantic nature, he was a skilled musician, knowing several instruments, including the piano, the flute, and the wobbleboard. For a time, he also picked up smoking, after a temporary mind jumble caused he and a companion, Fitz, to pick up each other’s habits. And while on the subjects of bad habits, he was also a skilled pickpocket. Brief History: Due to the trauma of the surgery and anesthesia, he suffered from amnesia after his regeneration. He went to look for Grace, who he believed knew who he was, unaware that the Master was following him, hoping to steal his remaining lives by using the Eye of Harmony. The two ended up in a power struggle, with Grace being used as a pawn by the Master, and the Tardis was forced on a temporal orbit to prevent the Earth from being sucked into the Eye. Despite the victory, this event would introduce a paradox around this doctor’s ‘birth’ and his timeline was from then on a tangled knot of chaos, paradoxes, and parallel timelines. As such, some of his adventures took place on either his own timeline or those of parallel existences. Also, in the course of his adventures, he met Compassion, who was a remembrance (type of clone) of a human woman. Due to her upbringing in a media based world, she always wore a receiver, which the doctor replaced with one of the Tardis’s to prevent tampering, with unforeseen consequences. It would eventually rewrite her biodata, and she would eventually evolve into a sentient Tardis, as an unintended replacement for the original one, which was lost in a battle with the Faction Paradox. Due to her unique nature as a Tardis, the Time Lords chased her and the Doctor, wanting to use her to breed new ones. They ran for a time, but eventually were caught and the last thing Compassion did was reunite the Doctor with his Tardis, found among the debris of Gallifrey, sending them both to earth, where he slept for a hundred years. For several years, he suffered again from amnesia, and even had one of his hearts taken by the Sabbath. It was not until he caught up with him and forced him to remove it some time later, that he was able to regrow it. While he had finally recovered and went on to have more adventures, these events would cause him to have an underlying edge of anger. When the Final Time War broke out, he did his best to avoid it as much as possible, running for years from battlefields. However, while trying to rescue a girl, Cass, from a crashing ship, she refused, on the basis that she couldn’t trust a time lord. When saying that he was better than a Dalek, she exclaimed that who could tell the difference these days. The two died in the crash onto the planet Karn, where the Sisterhood of Karn temporarily resurrected him. In turn, they had a deal for him; he could take an elixir and choose his next form, so that he could end the time war. While he initially refused, after seeing Cass’s body, he relented, choosing to become a warrior. His successor rejected the title of Doctor, instead becoming known as [Data Encypted] Reasons for Regeneration: A potion given to him by the Sisterhood of Karn, which allowed him to choose his form. The Ninth Doctor-War Weary Wanderer Personality: Left emotionally scarred in the aftermath of the Time War, this incarnation of the Doctor tended to be broody and melancholic, though he usually managed to hide his sorrow well behind a facade of manic energy and offbeat humor. He was deeply haunted by what he believed was his own role in the destruction of Gallifrey, and there is an underlying bitterness in him unseen in previous incarnations. Emotionally exhausted, he would often break down when confronted with needless destruction, and despite his cynicism and innate 'superiority complex' regarding humans, on more than one occasion he risked his life to save them. Though he tended to hold most people at arm's length, an exception was made in the case of his companion, Rose Tyler, with whom he shared a deep emotional bond, and though it remained unspoken, there was definite romantic tension between the pair. Once driven beyond a certain point, he could be cold and unforgiving to the point of cruelty. As one Dalek told him "You would make a good Dalek"; a point he did not dispute. Appearance: In contrast to previous regenerations, this incarnation chose to dress in a much simpler style. Usually seen wearing a leather jacket (similar to those worn in WWII by German U-boat captains), plain jumpers in varying shades of navy, red, or green, leather boots, and a wrist watch of which he was quite fond. He wore his hair close cropped and once jokingly claimed that his nose had 'special powers'. His most distinguishing feature was his ears, which tended to be on the larger side, made even more so by the haircut he chose. Quirks: He was extremely skilled at video games but notoriously bad at card tricks. He had a fondness for bananas and was a decent pickpocket, with a habit of uttering mild curses when annoyed (the first Doctor to do so). He had a habit of folding his arms and scolding, and often made speeches about various subjects. The 'master' of cynical jokes, he would use them in an attempt to diffuse tension, often falling short and making the situation awkwardly worse. Social skills were not his forte! He had a fondness for saying "Fantastic!" when confronting something dangerous or fascinating; and was actually the first Doctor to have a 'catch phrase'. Brief History: Due to being regenerated at the end of the Time War, and the timelines not being synchronized by the presence of his future selves, the 9th Doctor considered himself 'born in battle', losing all memories of saving Gallifrey, instead believing himself responsible for its destruction. There was little time to brood, however, as the TARDIS, sensing a temporal problem in 2005 London landed him there, where soon after he encountered the shop girl, Rose Tyler, the companion who would play one of the most important roles in not only this incarnation but future ones as well. Partly to show Rose the universe as he had promised her and partly in a vain attempt to outrun his own personal demons, the pair traveled from galaxy to galaxy and between time periods with the Doctor playing the reluctant hero time and time again. The only time that he and Rose were truly at odds were those times when she attempted to cross the parallel timelines and change the fixed point death of her father; something that he, as a Time Lord simply could not allow. His greatest, and final battle took place on Satellite 5, where under the ruse of a deadly game show, the Daleks were amassing hundreds of war ships aimed at the Earth. The full horror of his past and the chance to end his old enemies forever albeit at the cost of destroying the planet caused him momentary hesitation, though in the end morality won out; proving he was a better man than he had once been. It was here that he would meet Rose as the Bad Wolf Entity for the first time when she absorbed the Time Vortex into herself after opening the heart of the TARDIS, effectively ending the Time War as she scattered all the Dalek's and the Emperor's ashes into dust. The Bad Wolf had been shadowing the Doctor since his first arrival in London; foreshadowing the event. He also knew that Rose could not survive the power of the Time Vortex and in order to save her, he kissed her and absorbed it into himself, forcing a regeneration. His last words were "You were fantastic, Rose, and you know what? So was I." Reason for Regeneration: Cellular Regeneration after absorbing the Time Vortex The Tenth Doctor-Laid Back Loner Personality: This incarnation was a very cheerful and enthusiastic man, sometimes even when it was inappropriate, such as when he was in danger. However, unlike any of the other incarnations, he was honestly surprised and apologetic for being rude, preferring to be more charismatic. He had a great deal of love for Earth and its people, even referring to them as ‘giants’. As such, he was quick to defend them, particularly when it involved Rose, who he seemed even more in love with. In fact, this doctor engaged in the most romantic encounters of all the incarnations, having at least 6 different women approach him romantically, most of which he returned. Still, none of them replaced Rose, it would seem, as his Meta Crisis Doctor seemed to be able to reveal the depths of his feelings. As contrast to his romantic and witty side, he also struggled with a sense of deep loneliness and a righteous anger, even a deep rage, such as when he ruined Harriet Jone’s career or punished the Family of Blood. One of his companions said he needed a companion because alone, he relied more on his anger and dark side. However he was also one of the most forgiving, even forgiving the Master after all he had done and attempting to work with the Daleks before they turned on him. This doctor was one of the most beloved, and it’s not hard to see why. Appearance: He was considered a handsome man, very tall and slim, with dark hair that he took great pleasure in restyling often. It was in fact one of his happier things about his regeneration, as the last form had it very close shaven. His customary costume was a brown or blue pinstripe suit with tie, a long duster coat that he claimed was from Janis Joplin and Converse All Star shoes, the better to run and climb with. Also, he had a pair of dark tortoiseshell glasses, which he only wore to appear more ‘clever’. In fact, on at least one occasion, he purposely darkened the lenses so they could be sunglasses. On special occasions, he would even don a tuxedo and bowtie, though he still wore his Converse. As his future incarnation put it, this Doctor had a problem with vanity. Quirks: Of all the incarnations, this Doctor used his sonic screwdriver the most, even chiding his fifth incarnation for going ‘hands free”. Besides that, he also occasionally pulled out a stethoscope for non medical reasons, such as diagnostics of electronics or mechanical objects. However, he could also use his own body for science, being able to taste a substance and determine its properties, as well as sniff the air and tell what time period he was in. Also, he would occasionally put his or his companions’ lives in danger as he explored new and exotic technology, often referring to it as ‘beautiful’ or ‘brilliant’. On a less scientific note, he was also very fond of little shops, even those in hospitals, which he continued to dislike. And he was quite the foodie, having a fondness for many types of food and drink, including the banana, continued over from the last incarnation. He also considered edible ball bearings to be a ‘masterpiece’ and was delighted when Rose gave him a cake decorated with them. He would also try new things, such as seaweed truffles, to the amusement and astonishment of his companions. Also, he was known for several catch phrases, most important of them being “Allons-y!”. But he would also repeat ‘what’ when confused, each repetition growing more and more confused or astonished. If he was explaining himself, he would oftentimes interrupt himself with a ‘well….” before continuing on. And his saddest quote was “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry’, usually issued to someone before having to let them die. Brief History: This Doctor had a bit of a rough start on his journey, suffering from adverse effects from his regeneration and Rose not fully trusting who he was. He barely awoke in time to save ⅓ of the human population from blood control by the Sycorax ship, ending up in a sword fight that cost him his hand. He thankfully regrew it due to being in the first several hours of his regeneration, going on to defeat them and attempted to send the Sycorax away. But Harriet Jones ordered them shot and in anger, the Doctor caused doubts to be spread about her ability to do the job and got her fired. Still, after this exciting way to wake up, he continued on to having several adventures, including saving Queen Victoria from a werewolf attack. However, due to his blase' attitude to danger, she banished him and set up Torchwood to defend England from future aliens, including the Doctor. The two also ended up on a parallel world where they both met an alternate reality of Rose’s father as well as the cybermen. Mickey, also travelling with them, ended up staying back and taking over the place of his alternate reality self, seeing little room for him on their journey. It was this same alternate universe that months later, Rose would be stuck on, forever separated from the doctor, after she was rescued at the Battle of Canary Wharf. This loss would forever impact the Doctor. For a time, he travelled alone, before finally bringing Martha on as a companion, where the two would end up meeting the Master and become temporarily separated as he was taken captive, while she escaped to enact their plan. A year later, they, as well as all the people Martha gathered, were able to conquer the mind control the Master had them under, restoring the Doctor to his proper state. He attempted to forgive the Master, even offering to keep him with him on the Tardis, but the Master was shot and refused to regenerated, perishing in his arms. Martha left soon after, and he picked up Donna as a companion, though her journey was shortened due to the Meta Crisis, in which he tried to stop Davros and the Daleks from destroying reality itself. While she played a large part in this, not only helping to create the Meta Crisis Doctor between her DNA and the severed hand from the earlier sword fight, but also helping both doctors stop the reality bomb, she couldn't survive having the knowledge of the Time Lords inside of her, and her mind was wiped not only of that, but her adventures with the Doctor. He would also leave the Meta Crisis with Rose, asking her to help him just as she had helped his ninth incarnation. After this, the Doctor began to travel alone, still willing to help others, but refusing companions after having lost so many. He also began to run from his inevitable death, having been faced with reminders of it by the Ood, as well a prophecy. He ran as far as he could, having adventures along the way, but was forced to accept his fate, when he refused to let Wilf, Donna's grandfather, die from radiation and took it on himself. Surprisingly, this regeneration didn't happen all at once, allowing him to travel through time to visit old companions one last time, before finally succumbing to it. He considered this delayed regeneration 'his reward' but despite that, his final words were "I don't want to go." Reasons for Regeneration: Radiation poisoning The Eleventh Doctor-Baby Faced Brainiac Personality: Capricious and adventurous, this incarnation of the Doctor had a youthful energy and was quite lively. To call him eccentric would be an understatement; next to the fourth incarnation, he was probably the most 'alien' to date. Like his predecessor, he chose to be an optimist, though he, too, had a dark side that grew noticeably more pronounced when he did not have companions around to temper that side of his nature. He displayed a smugness that one of his companions described as 'frightening', though he displayed an extreme compassion and fondness for children, and they loved him equally in return. Much like the seventh incarnation, he could be manipulative and secretive, and tended to be arrogant, going so far as to congratulate himself aloud for a job well done. The arrogance was a facade to hide his own insecurities, however, and despite the fact that he was not above getting high-handed with them, he cared about his companions deeply. He was a very distrusting and lonely man,and like so many of his previous incarnations, someone haunted by a past that held far too many demons to ever truly allow him peace, even when he was at his happiest in the present. Appearance: Although he was technically the oldest of the incarnations, in appearance, he was the youngest, having the face and body of a young man in his early twenties, though there was a certain timelessness to him as well. His dark hair was styled longer than his previous two incarnations, green eyes, and a remarkably large chin which the TARDIS (and others) found quite amusing. Similar to the ninth incarnation, he also had large ears, which his companion, Clara, compared to "rocket fins". As far as clothing goes, the outfit was actually quite 'tame' considering his rather offbeat personality. It consisted of a plain brown tweed jacket with elbow patches, dress shirt, navy trousers, black boots, braces, and a bow tie. Bow ties were a fashion 'must' as they were deemed 'cool' by the 'young' Time Lord, along with hats, particularly fezzes. He also wore a gold wrist watch on his left wrist, with the face on the back of his wrist rather than on the front. Quirks: Similar to the fifth and tenth incarnations he had the ability to analyze objects by taste and smell, and he was quite proficient with a spear. He was also extremely talented at football and was a skilled computer hacker. He was telepathic, claimed that he could speak every language (including cat, horse, and baby), and was the first Doctor who could open the TARDIS merely by snapping his fingers. He was also a skilled artist with unusual culinary tastes; one of his favorite dishes being 'fish fingers and custard'. Like the first incarnation, he had the habit of calling his companions by their surnames, though with him it was more a term of endearment than a slur. Also, he would shout "Geronimo!" if he was about to do something dangerous or as a sign of approval. He tended to "rift" (think aloud), had incredible eyesight, and eidetic memory (ability to recall images, sounds, or objects in memory with high precision for a few minutes without using mnemonics). When he talked, he made wild sweeping gestures, and often spun in circles when walking or thinking on a problem. He had the habit of bopping people on the head if they did something he considered 'stupid', he liked to admire himself in the mirror, detested wine, and seemed quite fond of the word, "No!" as an exclamation. Brief History:The first person that the newly regenerated 11th Doctor met was a very young Amelia Pond when his TARDIS crashed into a crack in her bedroom wall and the two would soon form a friendship that would last a lifetime. It would be Amelia (Amy) and her boyfriend-turned-husband, Rory Williams, who would become the Doctor's most faithful travelling companions and dearest friends. In fact, he would go on to marry their daughter, Melody (River Song), who would prove very important to him not only in this lifetime but throughout many regenerations as well. When Rory and Amy are taken back in time by a Weeping Angel to a place where he can never see them again, it is arguably one of the darkest periods in the Doctor's existence. In fact, he would 'retire' for a time, forcing himself into semi-exile after this. Investigating snow in London, he would meet his "Impossible Girl", Clara Oswald, a mysterious young woman who would play a very important role in his future, just as she has done in his past. His biggest battle was with the Silence, who were intent on killing him in order to prevent another Time War should an ancient prophecy concerning the eleventh Doctor and the revelation of his through a time crack be fulfilled. In the end, he would find himself embroiled in a galactic battle on the planet, Trenzalore, his body worn and aged after having been 'on duty' there for 900 years , doing as he had always done-protecting the universe and its people. He proved victorious and even though age had taken its toll both physically and mentally, the day once again belonged to the Doctor. This should have been the last regeneration in his Life Cycle, but after persuasion from Clara, the Time Lords granted him a new cycle. He was able to find some peace in the fact that he, unlike his predecessors, would know the truth of Gallifrey, and that he had not participated in its destruction, but was rather its savior. Reason for Regeneration: As with the First Doctor, his body succumbs to old age, though before he regenerates he becomes 'young' again very briefly The Twelfth Doctor-Enigmatic Newcomer Personality: This incarnation is a rather sarcastic sort, possessed with a dry wit and a biting sense of humor. He comes across as extremely callous and uncaring, though nothing could be further from the truth. He would go to any lengths to protect those he cares about; though he has great difficulty expressing or receiving any sort of affection; going so far as to 'officially' declare that he 'does not do hugs'. He has a lot of internalized anger and guilt, and questions continually whether or not he is a good man, finally coming to terms that he is neither good nor bad, but rather just an 'idiot with a box'. His people skills are extremely lacking and to say that he is socially awkward would be putting it mildly. Even he, however, has maintained a certain degree of childishness in his mannerisms, much like his predecessors, as evidenced in his bickering and petulance when things do not go his way. Appearance: He appears as a gentleman in his mid-to-late fifties with short cropped grey hair and blue eyes. Of note is his extremely bushy, pronounced eyebrows which have been deemed 'angry', even by himself. His outfit of choice is a dark blue Crombie coat with a red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt, and black Doc Marten shoes. It is simple, stark, and back to basics for this Doctor, it would seem. Quirks: He speaks with a Scottish accent, which he takes as license to complain about pretty much everything. He is prone to boasting about himself, both in subtle and not-so-subtle manners. When posing a theory, this regeneration will do so by stating "Question", and then go on to give his theory as the answer to the rhetorical question. When in a moment of deep though or conjecture, this incarnation is prone to tell people to "Shut up" whether or not they happen to be speaking at the time. In fact, one of his more well known expressions is "Shut up, shut up, shuttity up up up!" He has a distinct disdain for humans, referring to them as "pudding brains". He also has a habit of assigning nicknames to people dependent on their physical appearance, an accessory they carry, or their profession. Past History: [Data Incomplete] No past recorded as he is a new regeneration. However, it should be noted that even though he is recorded as the 12th Doctor, in actually, he is the 1st Doctor of a new life cycle that the 11th Doctor received as a gift from the Time Lords. This regeneration has already done his part in helping the other incarnations place Gallifrey safely in a pocket dimension; whether or not he will remember doing so remains yet to be seen. The first person he sees upon his regeneration is Clara Oswald, companion to his immediate predecessor. He is, presumably, also still the husband of River Song, though this has not factored into his awareness at this time. Reason for Regeneration: [Data Non-Existent] Present Incarnation has not regenerated |
