Greetings, Doctor. When it comes to matters of galactic proportion, none can argue that you are a Time Lord, and as such are able to govern the laws of time and space. As you yourself once said:
"Yes, because there are laws. There are laws of time. And once upon a time there were people in charge of those rules. But they died. They all died. So you know who that leaves? Me! It's taken me all these years to realize, the laws of time are mine! And they will obey me!"
The problem lies not with your ability to govern the things around you, Doctor. The true heart of the problem most often lies with your inability to govern yourself. Though you are more than perfectly adequately equipped for solo travel, past history has proven time and again that you function best when accompanied by a companion. Your many incarnations have recognized this almost from the beginning and have availed themselves of a number of such individuals. Some would have a hand in saving the world, some would prove to be much more than they first appeared to be, and some, Doctor, would save your life-literally.
The time has come, Doctor, when it will be necessary for you to choose your next companion. But first, it would be prudent to learn more of those who shared the adventures of your past selves. Remember, Doctor, in the past lies the key to the future.
I draw your attention now to the button on your console directly below and ask that you press it now. It will take you to a special file charting the many companions throughout the years. For sake of space, it has been minimized; to get the expanded version, please point your screwdriver at the image and press (hover over the image and click your mouse).

As you can see for yourself, the list is quite extensive, and it would not behoove us to expound on each and every companion; we simply do not have the time to do so. While there is certainly no companion that is more important than the other, for the sake of time and efficiency we will be taking a closer look at the twelve that my date compilation has deemed most noteworthy.
Doctors Met: 7th
Ace McShane was a tough, streetwise girl of 16 with a troubled past. After being transported in a time storm to Iceworld, she would team up with the 7th Doctor, who saw beneath the angry, brash exterior and the "Professor" would become her mentor. Known for her readiness in combat, Ace is particularly fond of explosives, particularly her own brand of Nitro 9-much to the chagrin of the Doctor. The Doctor saw such potential in the young woman that he attempted to shape her mind to the point that she would be able to attend the Time Lord Academy; an opportunity she refused in order to continue her travels with him. Her given name was Dorothy Gale, due to her mother's fondness for the Wizard of Oz, which Ace despised.

Sarah Jane was an investigative reporter that traveled with the Doctor during his 3rd and 4th incarnations, and worked alongside him during several others. Arguably, one could say she was his closest companion. It was while posing as her Aunt Lavinia and investigating UNIT that she first met the Doctor. Suspicious of his activities, she stowed away on the TARDIS, and was subsequently taken back to 13th century England where she fought alongside him. Thus began a long history of such heroics, though her nose for a good story often landed her in sticky situations. This trusted companion was entrusted with protecting the Earth from hostile extraterrestrials and did so long after being abandoned on Earth by the 4th Doctor when he was summoned back to Gallfrey. He promised to return for her-a promise he never kept, and a hurt she never got over.

Romana was a Time Lady, born in the House of Heartshaven on Gallifrey. She was forced by the White Guardian to assist the 4th incarnation of the Doctor in his quest for the Key to Time, and the pairing was less than ideal. Haughty and critical, though she was much younger than the Doctor, she considered him her intellectual inferior and was not hesitant to tell him so. For his part, he was reluctant to have her along and was, at first, openly hostile to her presence. After a time, she decided to regenerate in a form identical to Princess Astra. This version was much more playful, and got along much better with the Doctor.

Susan was a Time Lady, and by most accepted accounts is the Doctor's biological granddaughter. She was with him when he originally fled from Gallifrey and would accompany him on many more adventures. Pictured as a lively, intelligent teenager, Susan was intrigued by life on 20th century Earth, but found adapting to it quite difficult. She was known both for her fierce love of the Doctor and her extreme reactions when frightened, and it was Susan who would coin the term TARDIS for the ship that she and the Doctor stole upon their flight from their home planet. Knowing she would never leave him otherwise, the Doctor locked the adult Susan out of the TARDIS, which allowed her the freedom to marry David Campbell, a freedom fighter of the 22nd century, with whom she would go on to raise a family. Sadly, she would lose contact with her beloved grandfather for many years, and then reunite with only briefly. "Susan" is the name she used on Earth, her real name was Arkytior, which in High Gallyfreyan can be translated as 'rose'.

Doctors Met: 2nd, 6th
James Robert "Jamie" McCrimmon would meet the 2nd Doctor on the afternoon of the infamous Battle of Culloden in 1746. The son of a talented piper, Jamie inherited the skill from his father; just one of the many strong connections to his Scottish roots. Another was his kilt, which was teasingly referred to as a 'skirt' by the Doctor and other companions. Jamie's intelligence (or lack thereof) was often disparaged by the other TARDIS members, but he more than made up for it in bravery and enthusiasm. The 2nd Doctor once remarked that Jamie was "the most reliable friend he ever had". His ability to reject mental manipulation would serve him well when the Time Lords attempted to wipe his memory clean of his time with the Doctor as part of the Doctor's punishment; later events would prove their efforts less than completely successful. He would go on to marry and have many children, getting 'his own' back on those who thought him daft when he spoke of the Doctor after he vanished in the TARDIS in front of the whole village.

Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton were the first human companions of the Doctor, 'kidnapped' by the Doctor after their concern for Susan led them to the TARDIS. Distrust between all parties was initially quite high, naturally, though later fences would be grudgingly mended. Barbara's knowledge as a history teacher and her open-minded nature prove invaluable on many occasions, and Ian's honesty and logical sense were a perfect counter-balance to the Doctor, who was much more of a rapscallion at heart. Though they learned to adapt to life on the TARDIS, returning to life in their own time period was their ultimate goal. Though never elaborated on, the two seemed to have a budding romance, and there has been speculation that they even married at some point.

Rose Tyler was working as an ordinary shop girl when she first met the Doctor; she would go on to play one of the most important roles in his life. Not only did she quickly go from simple companion to romantic interest, after staring into the heart of the TARDIS, she would become the living embodiment of the 'Bad Wolf'. (Bad Wolf was a cosmic warning to the Doctor when the universe was in danger) After a battle against the Daleks and Cybermen left her trapped in a parallel universe, she refused to give up and moved time and space to find 'her' Doctor again. She ended up getting her wish in a roundabout way when she and the half-human version of the 10th Doctor (Meta-Crisis Doctor) were reunited, the mutual decision made to spend the remainder of their lives together on a parallel Earth. Equal parts spunk and softness, Rose was the perfect 'doctor' for the Doctor-he saved the world, and she saved his soul.

Amy and Rory were childhood sweethearts, with Rory having grown up indulging Amy's fascination with her imaginary friend, 'the raggedy man'. It was not until years later that he learned the 'raggedy man' was no figment of imagination, but the very real Doctor, and that their childhood friend, Mels, was actually their daughter from the future, Melody. The pair traveled with the Doctor and shared many adventures; Amy's infatuation with the Time Lord sometimes leading to friction between the pair. The two eventually married, though Rory's death experiences kept them on parallel times more often than either would have liked. Rory overcame his initial suspicion and jealousy of the Doctor to become a close friend and caring companion, and Amy was, without question, one of the Doctor's staunchest supporters. When Rory was zapped back in time by a Weeping Angel, and Amy must make a choice, however, it is ultimately Rory, and not the Doctor that she chose, voluntarily blinking to be sent back in time to join her husband.

Doctors Met: 11th, 12th
Clara was dubbed "The Impossible Girl" by the 11th Doctor because even though she was physically an ordinary girl from the 21st century, this enigmatic miss was anything but 'ordinary'. Clara would appear to the Doctor in several guises, which ranged from a posh Victorian governess to a Cockney barmaid and even a girl-turned-Dalek from a future planet. All would look the same and say the same phrase to the Doctor, hundreds of years apart. In truth, it was the plucky girl's act of bravery upon entering his timeline and saving his life on Trenzalore that allowed the time winds to shatter the 'real Clara' into multiple copies of herself. It was she who helped the Doctor save Gallifrey and convinced the Time Lords to grant him a new regeneration cycle after his 11th one was wearing out due to old age. She was smart, sassy, and determined, and refused to leave the Doctor despite his continued efforts to the contrary. She continued her journey with the 12th Doctor, their relationship changing considerably after the death of her boyfriend, Danny Pink. Though rocky in the beginning, and at times volatile, the two have reached a tenuous understanding.

Donna Noble was referred to by both Rose Tyler and the 10th Doctor as 'the most important woman in all of creation', for her part in saving the universe from Davros and the Daleks. In personality, Donna was probably one of the most outspoken of the companions, though her fiery-temper and sharp tongue hid a heart of gold. Her relationship with the Doctor was strictly platonic, almost that of an older sister, and she was never shy about reprimanding him for his recklessness or fussing over him to take better care of himself. He once described her as his best friend. Too often overlooked by a domineering mother, Donna Noble more than proved her worth the day she became a Time Lady, taking in the newly regenerated energy of the 10th Doctor to save them all. Sadly, he was forced to erase her memories of him in order to save her life-an act that would haunt him for years.

Martha Jones was a medical student in residency at the Royal Hope Hospital in London when she first met the Doctor. After an impromptu transport by the Judoon landed them on the moon, she ended up saving his life, and was invited on "one trip" in the TARDIS as a reward. That "one trip" would end up being quite the extended stay. Bold and brainy in equal measure, Martha was the perfect companion save for one fatal flaw. She fell in love with the Doctor, and was crushed when upon her declaration he decreed that he could never return that love in kind. Though she hid the hurt well, ultimately it became too much to bear and she made the decision to walk away and get on with her own life without him. The two would remain good friends, however. She would later go on to become Doctor Martha Jones and marry Mickey Smith, both working as freelance bounty hunters.

A former Time Agent, he was working as a con man by the time that he met the Doctor, and the two had to work together to undo the plague he had set loose by accident. A very playful and flirty man, he is nonetheless loyal and willing to help, joining the Doctor and Rose for a time on their adventures. However, he was killed in a battle with the Daleks and then resurrected by Rose (in the Bad Wolf incarnation), giving him his unique gift-the gift of being unable to die permanantly. Though the Doctor initially abandoned him due to Jack now being 'unnatural', Jack went and waited through the centuries on Earth, even working with and reforming Torchwood before the two reconnected. From then on, the two would work together off and on and consider each other good friends.

Along the way, Doctor, you were fortunate enough to be graced with the friendship of some very special allies. Even though these people may not have shared your adventures as companions in the TARDIS, their place in your life has proven to be invaluable time and again. The time will come again, Doctor, when you will find it necessary to surround yourself with a circle of allies. Choose wisely and once again, I urge you to look for the past for inspiration in securing your future.
Doctors Met: 9th, 10th
Mickey Smith started off as the loving boyfriend of Rose Tyler, who mainly waited for her rare returns home with her mother, Jackie. At first, he wanted as little to do with the Doctor as possible and the Doctor him, the two always butting heads. In fact, he was commonly referred to by the Doctor, in a sometimes affectionate manner as "Mickey the Idiot". Also, he was more cowardly then Rose around aliens. Still, he would help out on occasion and he soon showed remarkable skills in computer hacking. On at least one occasion, he was even able to save the Doctor's life. On one of his few trips with the Doctor, they ended up in a parallel world and he met his alternate self, Rickey, a brave Resistance fighter. After Rickey's death, he chose to stay there and take over as Rickey, though he would later on return to his Earth and marry Martha Jones, the two becoming an alien fighting duo.

River Song, when you first meet her, is an enigmatic and flirty time travelling archaelogoist with the surprising knowledge of the Doctor's real name. As time progresses, she loses some of her mystery as it's revealed that she is the daughter of two of the Doctor's companions, Amy and Rory Williams. Taken from them as a child and conditioned by the Doctor's enemies to kill the Doctor, she instead breaks her conditioning and even falls in love with the Doctor, the two marrying. However, due to the nature of time travel, she has to keep a diary to keep track of their meetings and even where along the time line they are. Also, thanks to her parent's 'adventourous spirit', she also had the ability to regenerate and fly the Tardis.

Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, better known as The Brigadier, was the head of UNIT and the first ally that The Doctor met in the organization when the doctor first become their scientific advisor. Together, the two worked together to stop numerous alien invasions. While the two consistently butted heads due to the Brigadier's tendency to blow up threats while the Doctor wanted to investigate, the two become close friends and met up several times even after the doctor left UNIT. The two worked for many years together and every time the Doctor did work with UNIT, he would ask for the Brigadier. When he found out that he passed away in his sleep during his Eleventh regeneration, the Doctor mourned his old friend. Though he only met him in Cyber-form, the 12th Doctor finally gave the Brigadier the salute he had always wanted in tribute.

Wilfred Mott was the maternal grandfather of Donna Noble, and in strict contrast with his daughter Sylvia Noble, was an open-minded soul and trusting of the Doctor. He believed aliens would one day come in peace, even going so far as to set up a telescope on a hill behind the house so that he could both look at the stars and watch for aliens. He also stubbornly refused to leave the city when everyone else did for Christmas, thinking that not every Christmas would be ruined by alien invasions. It was then that the two met for the first time, though he would not know who the Doctor was until Donna started to travel with him. Even after Donna's mind was wiped, the two kept in touch, Wilfred even promising to look up at the stars for Donna. When the Doctor was going through his regeneration into the Eleventh, he stopped by to give Wilfred a winning ticket and visit him one last time as promised.

Face of Boe was one of the Doctor's more unusual looking allies, a literal 'face' or head being kept alive in a life containment jar. By all accounts, he was one of the Doctor's best and oldest friends. A mysterious being who seldom talked, he was nonetheless well known through the universe due to his almost immortal lifespan. He was an incredibly compassionate individual, giving up his life to save the people who were on the Motorway, trapped underground for years. He gave encoruragement and even tried to warn the 10th doctor that he was not alone (meaning the Master was around still). But it was a mutual relationship, as the Face of Boe also credited the Doctor for teaching him to look at the universe differently.

Unlike the others on our list, the Sisterhood of Karn was an ever-changing group that the Doctor met. They were a female society dedicated to protecting their Sacred Flame (an essential element in the Elixir of Life) or as the Eighth put it, 'the flame of utter boredom'. While they had some contentious relationships at times with the Doctor (at one time, even believing that the Fourth doctor was trying to steal what remained of the Elixir), they also felt indebted (thanks to his work in reviving their Sacred Flame) and even cared for him. When the Eighth regeneration crashed and died on their planet, they resurrected him and offered him the chance to control his regeneration and change the outcome of the Time War.
